December Weddings

The weather is just starting to turn and the nights are slowly drawing in but it feels a little bit like the 2020 wedding season still hasn’t really got started (thanks Covid!). But, weddings aren’t all about long hot summer days. Winter weddings, and especially December weddings, are wonderfully romantic and very photogenic around Christmas time!

Dramatic sparkler exits are a great addition to a winter wedding and of course a fab opportunity for some gorgeous photos. Hotel Cromwell in Stevenage is the perfect setting for a festive winter wedding. Vintage features, open fireplaces, and wood panelled rooms all add to those cosy winter vibes.

The mild temperate climate here in England makes for a mixed bag of weather conditions regardless of the season. In fact, lots of couples tell me they decided to get married in December because you can’t guarantee a sunny day in the summer. I can very much relate to that logic since my wife and I made this exact choice for our own wedding nearly 10 years ago! We love Christmas too so it made perfect sense for us to combine this magical winter season with our big day.

Wintry weather conditions never fail to make beautiful and dramatic wedding photos when photographed the right way. As a thick fog descended over the beautiful Caer Llyan during Megan and Ben’s wedding you could have been forgiven for thinking that any outdoor photography was pointless. However, with creative use of lighting we used the conditions to our advantage and made some gorgeously romantic images.

Winter, spring, summer or fall (ahhm autumn) it rains a lot here in the UK. But, not only is rain on your wedding day thought to bring good luck, it can bring dramatic wedding photos too! Just like this picture taken in the grounds of Hotel Cromwell, Stevenage…

.. and this gorgeosly romantic moment from Allie and Ben’s winter wedding at Tewin Bury Farm in Hertfordshire.

December weddings are jam-packed with all of the love, excitement and emotion of their summery counterparts but somehow they come with an extra dose of cosiness and warmth. There is always some magic in the air on a wedding day, but there is just something about a sung winter wedding that dials it up to 11.

When the sun goes down the studio flash lights come out! I love this cinematic moment captured at Kate and Kelly’s beautiful winter wedding at Hotel Cromwell in Hertfordshire.

Crisp low winter sunshine, dramatic skies, icy frosts, and occasionally even snow, the English winter time rarely disappoints in setting a beautiful backdrop for your wedding, and of course your winter wedding photos too! Then when the sun drops behind the horizon I use sophisticated lighting equipment to make some seriously striking and dramatic wedding photos in the dark. These are always my favourites images and they are definitely the shots that couples have printed for the wall.

Love in Liverpool! Sarah and David had a fabulous festive wedding at Oh Me Oh My in the heart of Liverpool city centre. Of course we had to pop outside to grab this epic shot beneath the famous Liver Building.

When the days are shorter and darker choosing the right photographer for the job is more important than ever. Learn more about my approach to winter wedding photography and how to make your December wedding that extra special.
